Suitcase sizes in inches

Suitcases are sold by one number and flown against three. Here is what each labeled size really measures and what it holds.

Suitcase sizes are named by the height of the case body in inches: 20 and 21 inch are carry-ons, 24 and 25 inch are medium checked bags, and 28 and 29 inch are large checked bags. The important number is not the label - it is the three dimensions added together, because US airlines cap a checked bag at 62 linear inches.

That linear total is what decides whether a bag is oversize, and it is where large cases get people. A 28-inch case measured at 28 x 18.5 x 11.75 inches overall - which is Travelpro's published figure for its 25-inch Platinum Elite expanded profile - adds to 58.25 linear inches. Push the height to 29 inches and the depth to 13 and you are at 60 or 61 before anything is expanded.

Every figure in the table below was read from the maker's own product page on 2026-10-06 and is linked at the end of this page. Where a maker blocked automated access, the model is simply absent rather than guessed at.

Suitcase sizes, verified figures

Case and overall dimensions as published by Travelpro on travelpro.com, read 2026-10-06. Overall includes wheels and carry handles, which is how airlines measure. Linear inches is the sum of the three overall figures.

The size ladder, and what each step is for

What each labeled size class is normally used for. Trip lengths assume one adult in warm weather with no laundry; cold weather moves every row up one.
LabelClassTypical tripAirline role
19-20 inSmall cabin1-3 nightsCarry-on, clears a strict sizer
21-22 inStandard cabin3-5 nights, or a week with laundryCarry-on on mainline carriers

26-27 inLarge checked2-3 weeksChecked - watch the linear total
28-29 inExtra largeLong trips, shared, bulky kitChecked - often near oversize

The two sizes that cover almost everybody are 21 inch and 25 inch. A 21-inch cabin bag and a 25-inch checked bag between them handle a weekend, a week and a fortnight - which is why luggage sets are usually sold in exactly that pairing. What size luggage do I need works through the choice properly.

What 62 linear inches means

Linear inches is simply height plus width plus depth. American Airlines publishes 62 linear inches and 50 lb for a standard checked bag, and the other major US carriers publish the same figure. A bag over it is oversize, and the oversize fee is charged separately from the overweight fee - so a big, heavy bag can attract both.

Add the three overall dimensions, not the case dimensions, because wheels and handle housings count. A 28 x 21 x 14 inch bag is 63 linear inches and oversize before anything goes in it, which is the trap in some cheap sets sold as `checked` size.

Expansion counts

An expansion zip adds one to two inches of depth. On a bag already at 58 or 59 linear inches that is enough to cross 62. Use expansion on the return leg only if you know where you are starting from.

Inches versus liters

American suitcases are sold in inches and travel backpacks are sold in liters, which makes them hard to compare. Travelpro publishes both for some lines: the 21-inch Platinum Elite carry-on is 46 liters, and the 25-inch Platinum Elite is 97 liters.

So a standard carry-on suitcase is roughly a 40 to 46 liter bag, and a 40-liter travel backpack is genuinely carry-on equivalent. How many liters is a carry-on converts the range properly, and rolling duffel bag sizes does the same for duffels.

On big bags, weight is the real limit

A 25-inch case rarely approaches 62 linear inches. What it does approach is 50 lb, and it gets there faster than people expect because the empty bag itself is 7 to 10 lb of it.

That is the argument for buying the lighter version of whatever size you need: at a published 6.8 lb the Maxlite 5 25-inch leaves 43 lb of a 50 lb allowance for contents, where a 10 lb case leaves 40. How much does an empty suitcase weigh has the full picture.

Anyone with a checked bag
Best medium checkedPick 1

The 25-inch size, in the lightest version of it

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Checked Spinner

Anyone checking a bag for a week or two. The 25-inch class is the sweet spot for most trips, and at a published 6.8 lb empty this is a light example of it - which matters because the binding limit on a checked bag is weight, not space.

The specs that decide it

  • Case dimensions: 25 x 18 x 11 in, per Travelpro
  • Overall dimensions: 27 x 18.5 x 11.5 in = 57 linear inches
  • Empty weight: 6.8 lb per Travelpro - 43 lb of a 50 lb limit is yours
  • Capacity: Travelpro states up to 11 outfits

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Expanded it moves closer to the 62 linear inch ceiling, and a softside checked bag scuffs visibly. Lighter fabric is also less abrasion-resistant than a heavier line from the same maker.

Best large checkedPick 2

The 28-inch size, for the trips that genuinely need it

Samsonite Freeform Hardside Large Spinner

Families sharing one bag, trips over two weeks, and anyone moving bulky kit. A 28-inch case is the right answer when the volume is genuinely needed - the mistake is buying one for a one-week trip and then filling it.

The specs that decide it

  • Class: 28-inch large checked - measure before you fly, not after
  • Shell: Polycarbonate - flexes under load and recovers
  • Watch: Large cases sit close to the 62 linear inch ceiling
  • Wheels: Spinner

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A 28-inch case filled with clothes will pass 50 lb before it looks full, so the overweight fee arrives instead of the oversize one. Hardshells also scuff permanently and have no give at all.

Settles the weight questionPick 3

The one that tells you whether the size you bought is the size you can fly

Etekcity Digital Luggage Scale

Anyone flying a checked bag. On a large case the limit you hit first is 50 lb, not 62 linear inches, and a scale at home costs a fraction of one overweight fee.

The specs that decide it

  • Capacity: Typically up to 110 lb / 50 kg - above any airline limit
  • Units: Switches between lb and kg for international routes
  • Weight: A few ounces - it costs you nothing to carry
  • Use: Weigh at home, where the answer is not a fee

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Hook scales need you to lift the bag clear of the floor and hold it steady, which is awkward with a heavy bag and genuinely difficult with a bad back. The reading also drifts while the bag swings.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard suitcase sizes in inches?
Carry-ons are labeled 19 to 22 inches, medium checked bags 24 to 25 inches, and large checked bags 28 to 29 inches. The label is the height of the case body, not the overall height including wheels and handles.
What are the dimensions of a 25-inch suitcase?
Travelpro publishes case dimensions of 25 x 18 x 11 inches for its Maxlite 5 25-inch spinner, with overall dimensions of 27 x 18.5 x 11.5 inches once wheels and handles are counted - 57 linear inches. Figures differ slightly by maker and line.
What are the dimensions of a 28-inch suitcase?
Around 28 x 18 to 21 x 12 to 14 inches depending on the line, which puts a 28-inch case between roughly 58 and 63 linear inches. That is close enough to the 62-inch airline ceiling that you should add the three published figures before you buy.
What size suitcase is 62 linear inches?
62 linear inches is not a size, it is a ceiling - the sum of height, width and depth that US airlines allow for a standard checked bag. A 25-inch case is typically 57 to 58 linear inches; a 28 or 29-inch case can be at or over 62.
Is a 24-inch suitcase a carry-on or checked?
Checked, on almost every carrier. Southwest and Frontier are the exceptions - both publish 24 x 16 x 10 inches for a cabin bag - but a 24-inch case is a checked bag on the other major US airlines and across most of the world.
How many liters is a 25-inch suitcase?
Around 90 to 100 liters. Travelpro publishes 97 liters for its 25-inch Platinum Elite spinner, against 46 liters for the 21-inch carry-on in the same line.
