How much does an empty suitcase weigh?

The empty weight is on every spec sheet and almost nobody reads it. On a weighed allowance it is the most important number there.

An empty wheeled carry-on weighs roughly 5 to 8 lb, and an empty medium checked suitcase roughly 7 to 11 lb. Those are real published figures: Travelpro lists 5.4 lb for its 21-inch Maxlite 5 carry-on and 7.8 lb for the 21-inch Platinum Elite, and 6.8 lb and 9.8 lb respectively for the 25-inch versions of the same two lines.

That spread matters because the weight limit is on the packed bag, not on what you put in it. On a 50 lb checked allowance, a 6.8 lb case leaves you 43.2 lb; a 9.8 lb case leaves 40.2. Three pounds is a pair of shoes and a jacket. On an international 7 kg cabin allowance - 15.4 lb - a 7.8 lb carry-on has already eaten half of it before anything goes in.

So the honest buying rule is simple: if you fly carriers that weigh your bag, shop on empty weight first and capacity second. If nobody weighs your bag, buy the heavier, more durable construction instead.

Where an empty suitcase's weight actually is

Very little of it is the part you pack into. The weight is in the hardware, and that is why two bags of identical volume can differ by four pounds.

  • Wheels and their housings. Four spinner wheels plus mounting plates are the single heaviest component group on most cases.
  • The telescoping handle assembly. Aluminium tubes, a locking mechanism and the internal channels that carry them.
  • The frame or shell. Thicker polycarbonate, aluminium framing or heavier-denier fabric all add mass - and all add life.
  • Interior organization. Suiters, dividers, compression panels and pocket walls are not free. This is most of the Platinum Elite's extra weight over the Maxlite 5.

Which is why a backpack of the same volume weighs less than any wheeled case: it has none of the first two categories. Travel backpack vs suitcase is that trade in full.

What the empty weight costs you, by allowance

How much of each common allowance is spent before you pack. Empty weights are the verified Travelpro figures above.

Frontier checked40 lb34.6 lb32.2 lb30.2 lb

The 7 kg row is the one that changes behaviour. Ten pounds of clothes is a long weekend; 5.6 lb is not really a trip. That is the entire reason best lightweight luggage exists as a category, and why the same bag can be the right and wrong buy depending on where you fly.

US domestic flyers can ignore all of this

Cabin bags are not weighed on US domestic routes, and a 50 lb checked allowance is generous enough that three pounds of suitcase rarely decides anything. Buy the durable line instead - see best luggage for frequent travelers.

How to find the figure before you buy

  1. Look for `Weight` on the maker's own product page, not the retailer listing. Travelpro, Samsonite and Osprey all publish it.
  2. Check which size the figure belongs to. A line's weight is quoted per size, and the carry-on figure gets copied onto checked listings surprisingly often.
  3. Compare within one brand first. That isolates construction from marketing, which is why the table above uses two Travelpro lines rather than two brands.
  4. Weigh the bag yourself when it arrives. Published figures are accurate but your baseline is the only one that matters.
  5. Write it down. You will use it every time you pack.

If a listing does not state a weight at all, that is information too. Lightweight is a selling point, so makers who have it say so.

What to do if your bag is already heavy

You cannot change the empty weight of a bag you own, so the remaining levers are the contents and the split between bags. Both are more effective than people expect.

  • Shoes. Two pairs including the ones on your feet. This is the biggest single weight line in most bags.
  • Wear the heaviest layer. A coat on your arm is not in the weighed bag. Gate agents do not weigh what you are wearing.
  • Move dense small items to the personal item - books, chargers, toiletries - but check whether that bag has its own weight limit abroad, because many do.
  • Decant toiletries. Full-size bottles are mostly water and they are heavy. Travel-size toiletries guide covers it.
  • Compression cubes save volume, not weight. Useful for fit, useless for a scale - and by letting you pack more they can make overweight more likely.

And weigh it at home. A gate scale is not negotiable and the fee is set in advance; a scale on your floor costs a fraction of one fee - see best luggage scales.

Anyone with a weight limit
Lightest carry-on herePick 1

The one to buy when the cabin bag gets weighed

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner

Anyone flying a carrier that weighs cabin bags. At a published 5.4 lb this is a genuinely light wheeled case, and the 2.4 lb it saves over the Platinum Elite in the same size is clothes you get to bring.

The specs that decide it

  • Empty weight: 5.4 lb, per Travelpro
  • Case dimensions: 21 x 14 x 9 in; overall 23 x 14.5 x 9 in
  • Shell: Polyester softside, which gives slightly at a tight gate
  • Why it matters: 35% of a 7 kg cabin allowance, against 51% for the heavier line

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Lighter fabric and a simpler handle wear faster under weekly use than a durability-first line. Four-wheel spinners are also wrong for cobbles, where you end up dragging on two wheels and loading the housings sideways.

Lightest checked herePick 2

The one that leaves you the most of a 50 lb allowance

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Checked Spinner

Anyone checking a bag on a 50 lb allowance who has ever repacked at a kerb. Three pounds of suitcase saved is three pounds of contents gained, every single trip, for the life of the bag.

The specs that decide it

  • Empty weight: 6.8 lb, per Travelpro
  • Case dimensions: 25 x 18 x 11 in; overall 27 x 18.5 x 11.5 in = 57 linear in
  • Allowance left: 43.2 lb of a 50 lb limit
  • Capacity: Travelpro states up to 11 outfits

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Softside checked bags scuff visibly and the lighter fabric is less abrasion-resistant than a heavier line. Expanded it moves toward the 62 linear inch oversize ceiling.

No shell at allPick 3

The one with the least bag in the bag

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack

Travelers who want the most contents per pound of allowance. Most of a wheeled case's empty weight is the wheel assembly, the handle tube and the structure holding them; remove all three and you are carrying fabric.

The specs that decide it

  • Weight: Light - there is no wheel or handle assembly to carry
  • Capacity: 40 liters - a week or more with one laundry stop
  • Harness: Stows away behind a panel for check-in
  • Shape: Frameless, so it compresses at a tight gate

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You carry the weight on your body, which is tiring over a long terminal and wrong if you have back or shoulder problems. No dedicated laptop sleeve, and no wheels means no relief on a long walk.

Tells you the real numberPick 4

The one that answers the question before the airport does

Etekcity Digital Luggage Scale

Anyone flying a weighed allowance. The published empty weight tells you where you start; a scale tells you where you have ended up, which is the only figure that gets charged for.

The specs that decide it

  • Capacity: Typically up to 110 lb / 50 kg - above any airline limit
  • Units: Switches between lb and kg for international routes
  • Weight: A few ounces - it costs you nothing to carry
  • Use: Weigh the empty bag once, then you know your own baseline

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Hook scales need you to lift the bag clear of the floor and hold it steady, which is awkward with a heavy bag and genuinely difficult with a bad back. The reading drifts while the bag swings, so you need a still moment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an empty suitcase weigh?
An empty wheeled carry-on is roughly 5 to 8 lb and an empty medium checked suitcase roughly 7 to 11 lb. Travelpro publishes 5.4 lb for its 21-inch Maxlite 5 carry-on, 7.8 lb for the 21-inch Platinum Elite, 6.8 lb for the 25-inch Maxlite 5 and 9.8 lb for the 25-inch Platinum Elite.
How much should an empty suitcase weigh?
As little as the construction you need allows. Under about 7 lb is light for a carry-on and under about 8 lb is light for a 25-inch checked bag. Above that you are paying weight for durability or organization, which is a reasonable trade if nobody weighs your bag.
Does the empty weight of a suitcase count toward the airline limit?
Yes. Airlines weigh the packed bag, so every pound of suitcase is a pound you cannot pack. On a 7 kg international cabin allowance a 7.8 lb case has used just over half the allowance before anything goes in it.
How much does an empty large suitcase weigh?
A 28 or 29-inch case is typically 10 to 13 lb empty, and the heavier end is where aluminium framing and premium interior organization sit. On a 50 lb limit that leaves under 40 lb of contents, which is why large cases hit the weight limit long before they look full.
Are hardside suitcases heavier than softside?
Not reliably. Modern polycarbonate shells are light, and a heavily organized softside bag can easily outweigh a plain hardshell of the same size. Compare the published weights rather than assuming from the shell type.
Why is my suitcase heavier than the published weight?
Usually because the figure you read belongs to a different size in the same line, or because you are comparing a non-spinner to a spinner. Four wheels and their housings are among the heaviest components on a case. Weigh your own bag empty once and use that number.
