Average carry-on luggage size

Averages are useful for buying and useless for arguing. Here is what the typical carry-on limit, capacity and empty weight actually are, and which airlines sit outside them.

The average carry-on luggage size across major US airlines is 22 x 14 x 9 inches - about 56 x 36 x 23 cm - and it is also the most common single figure, published identically by American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska. That envelope works out to roughly 38 to 45 litres of usable capacity depending on how the bag is shaped, and a wheeled case built to it typically weighs between 5 and 8 pounds empty.

The average is worth knowing for one reason: it tells you what bag to buy. It is worth nothing at a gate, where the only number that applies is the one your specific carrier publishes. Three major US airlines sit outside the average in opposite directions, and those three are the reason anybody searches for this.

Published carry-on limits, and where the average comes from

Figures as published by each carrier. Five of these eight publish the identical 22 x 14 x 9, which is why that is both the average and the mode.

What the average size is in litres

22 x 14 x 9 inches is 2,772 cubic inches, which is about 45 litres of raw box volume. No suitcase delivers that, because the shell, the wheels, the handle tubes, the lining and the curves all take their cut.

  • Hardside carry-on in this envelope: typically 35 to 40 litres usable.
  • Softside carry-on in this envelope: typically 38 to 45 litres usable, because external pockets add volume outside the measured shell.
  • Frameless travel pack in this envelope: typically 38 to 45 litres, and it compresses.

The capacity-to-trip-length question is worked through properly in how many litres is a carry-on.

Average empty weight of a carry-on

Autocomplete pairs "average carry on luggage size" with "average carry on luggage weight empty", and the two questions are connected: the bag's own weight is the part of a weighed allowance you do not get to use.

A wheeled carry-on built to the standard envelope typically weighs between 5 and 8 pounds empty. Travelpro publishes 5.4 lb for the 21-inch Maxlite 5 and 7.8 lb for the 21-inch Platinum Elite - the same brand, the same size, two and a half pounds apart. Against a 7 kg (15.4 lb) international cabin allowance, that difference is a sixth of everything you are allowed to bring. The verified figures are collected in how much does an empty suitcase weigh.

The three airlines outside the average

Southwest and Frontier publish 24 x 16 x 10 inches - two inches longer, two wider and one taller than the standard. That is a genuinely different bag size rather than a rounding difference, and a case bought against it is oversized everywhere else.

Spirit publishes 22 x 18 x 10 inches - standard length, but four inches wider and an inch deeper. Frontier also publishes a 35 lb carry-on weight limit, which almost no other US carrier does, and ultra-low-cost carriers enforce their sizers because an oversize finding is revenue. Buy to the strictest limit you fly against regularly, not to the most generous one.

The international average is tighter

Outside the US, cabin baggage allowances cluster around 55 x 40 x 20 cm to 56 x 45 x 25 cm, and the weight limit - 7 to 10 kg - is the binding constraint far more often than the dimensions are.

A US-standard 22 x 14 x 9 bag is 56 x 36 x 23 cm, which fits most of those envelopes on paper. The weight is where it fails: fill a 40-litre case with clothes and it will clear 10 kg without difficulty. The per-region figures are in international carry-on dimensions and cabin baggage size.

Built to the averagePick 1

The bag designed against the typical limit, at a low empty weight

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner

If the average is the limit you fly against, buy a bag designed against it rather than one marketed around it. The Maxlite line's argument is empty weight - which matters on any international leg that weighs the cabin bag, because the bag's own mass comes straight out of a 7 kg allowance before you pack a shirt.

The specs that decide it

  • Weight: Among the lightest wheeled carry-ons, which is the whole point
  • Size: Built to the 22 x 14 x 9 standard, unexpanded
  • Construction: Softside, so it compresses slightly at a tight gate
  • Capacity: Around 40 litres usable in this envelope

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Light construction is thin construction: the fabric and the frame both give more than a hardshell, so it protects contents less well if it gets gate-checked. The expansion zip also takes it out of carry-on legality the moment it is opened.

Best capacity in the envelopePick 2

The one that uses the whole box rather than part of it

Samsonite Freeform Hardside Carry-On Spinner

Two bags can both measure 22 x 14 x 9 and hold quite different amounts, because curves, tapers and external pockets all eat into the box. A split-case clamshell packs flat and evenly on both sides, which is the shape that gets closest to the theoretical capacity of the envelope - and polypropylene flexes under impact rather than cracking.

The specs that decide it

  • Size: Carry-on spec against the 22 x 14 x 9 standard
  • Shell: Polypropylene-type hardshell - light for the category, and water-resistant
  • Interior: Split-case clamshell, which packs flat and evenly on both sides
  • Capacity: At the top of the usable range for this envelope

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A rigid shell cannot compress, so a case at the limit is a case that either fits a sizer or does not - there is no squeezing it. Hard shells also scuff visibly and permanently from the first trip.

Best when weight is the limitPick 3

The one for carriers that weigh the cabin bag

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack

Average dimensions are only half the story on international routes, where a 7 to 10 kg cabin allowance is normal. A wheeled hardside case can consume a third of that before you pack anything. A frameless pack does not, and it compresses into a sizer in a way a rigid case cannot - which is why the average empty weight figure matters as much as the average size.

The specs that decide it

  • Capacity: 40 litres - at the top of what the standard envelope holds
  • Weight: Light, which matters on a 7-10 kg cabin limit
  • Harness: Stows away for check-in
  • Shape: Compresses under a sizer where a hardshell will not

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You carry it rather than rolling it, which across a long terminal with a full load is a real difference and the wrong choice entirely with a bad back or shoulder. There is also no way to set it down and lean on it.

How many litres is the average carry-on?
The 22 x 14 x 9 envelope is about 45 litres of raw volume, and real bags deliver roughly 35 to 45 litres usable depending on whether they are hardside, softside or a frameless pack.
What does an average carry-on weigh empty?
Between about 5 and 8 pounds for a wheeled case built to the standard envelope. Travelpro publishes 5.4 lb for the 21-inch Maxlite 5 and 7.8 lb for the 21-inch Platinum Elite.
Which airlines allow a bigger carry-on than average?
Southwest and Frontier both publish 24 x 16 x 10 inches, and Spirit publishes 22 x 18 x 10. Frontier also applies a 35 lb carry-on weight limit, which most US carriers do not.
