How to make your suitcase lighter

Weigh the empty case first. On a lot of overweight bags, a third of the problem is the suitcase itself.

The fastest way to make a suitcase lighter is to attack it in this order: weigh the empty case, remove all but two pairs of shoes, wear the heaviest clothing on the plane, and swap liquids for solids. Those four moves routinely take five to eight pounds off a bag, which is the gap between 54 lb and legal.

The reason to start with the empty case is that people rarely think of it as cargo. A large hardside spinner weighs 9 to 11 lb empty; a lightweight softside of the same capacity weighs 6 to 7. On a 50 lb allowance that difference is nearly ten percent of everything you were allowed to bring, and you spent it on shell plastic.

Weigh it at home, not at the counter

Airline overweight fees start at the 50 lb line and are charged per bag, per direction - and the queue is the worst possible place to repack. A hook scale costs less than one overweight fee and settles the question in your hallway.

Where the weight actually is

Typical weights for the categories that dominate an overweight bag.

Add up the right-hand column honestly and most overweight bags have six to ten pounds available without giving up anything you will actually miss. The empty-case line is the one people never check - how much does an empty suitcase weigh has the figures by size.

The limits you are packing against

  • Checked bag: 50 lb / 23 kg and 62 linear inches on nearly every carrier in economy. Overweight fees begin immediately past 50 lb and are charged each way.
  • Carry-on, US domestic: most major US carriers publish no cabin weight limit at all - only dimensions.
  • Carry-on, international and low-cost: commonly 7 to 10 kg, and weighed at the gate with a hook scale.
  • Personal item: rarely weighed anywhere, which is why it is where the last two pounds should go.

The per-carrier numbers are in checked bag size and weight limits. The asymmetry between US domestic and everywhere else is the single most useful thing to know here: on a US domestic itinerary you can pack a heavy carry-on with impunity, and on a European budget carrier you absolutely cannot.

One heavy bag or two light ones

On most US carriers checked bags are priced per bag, so the second bag costs more than an overweight fee on the first - keep it to one bag and manage the weight. On carriers that sell a weight allowance rather than a bag count, which is common in Europe and Asia, the arithmetic reverses and splitting across two bags can be free.

Check which model your airline uses before you decide to split. Guessing wrong costs money in both directions.

The leg where this actually goes wrong

Almost nobody is overweight on the way out. They are overweight coming home, with the souvenirs, the wine, the extra shoes and the duty free, and with no scale available and no time to repack. That is the trip to plan for.

  1. Leave three to four pounds of headroom on the outbound bag deliberately.
  2. Pack a foldable duffel flat in the case. If the main bag is over, the overflow becomes a second bag or a carry-on instead of an overweight fee.
  3. Weigh the bag in the hotel room the night before, not at the airport.
  4. Put the dense souvenirs in your personal item, where nobody weighs them.
  5. Post the heavy, non-urgent things home if the postage is less than the fee - for a few pounds over, it often is.

The one that turns this from guesswork into arithmetic

Etekcity Digital Luggage Scale

Every other step on this page needs a number to work against. A hook scale gives you the empty weight of the case, the weight of the packed bag, and - most usefully - the weight of the trip home with the souvenirs in it, weighed in a hotel room rather than discovered at a counter. The lb/kg switch matters the moment you leave the US, where the limit is usually quoted at 23 kg.

The specs that decide it

  • Capacity: Reads to around 110 lb / 50 kg - above any airline limit
  • Units: Switches between lb and kg for international routes
  • Weight: A few ounces, so it travels for the return leg
  • Use: Empty case, packed bag, and again before the flight home

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You have to lift the bag clear of the floor to read it, which is awkward with a 50 lb case and genuinely hard if lifting is a problem. Cheap strain gauges also drift over time, so check it against a known weight occasionally.

Lighter casePick 2

The one that spends less of the allowance on itself

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner

If your empty-case figure came back high, this is the structural fix. The Maxlite line exists specifically to minimise empty weight, and on a route where the cabin bag is weighed - most of Europe and Asia cap it at 7 to 10 kg - the pounds you save on the shell are pounds of clothing you get to bring. Softside also gives slightly in a gate sizer, which a hardshell does not.

The specs that decide it

  • Built for: Low empty weight rather than shell strength
  • Construction: Softside, so it compresses a fraction under a firm push
  • Pockets: External, which a hardshell does not offer
  • Best on: Routes where the cabin bag is weighed

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Light means less protection - softside fabric will not save a camera lens the way a polycarbonate shell will, and it absorbs water on a wet tarmac. The expansion zip is also a trap: using it takes the bag out of carry-on legal.

The ones that reveal how much of the bag was empty

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes

Worth being clear: compression does not remove weight, it removes volume. What it does is let you see the difference between a bag that is heavy and a bag that is merely full - and on a winter trip, where jumpers and fleeces are most of the bulk and very little of the weight, that distinction is the whole problem. Compress first, then decide what to leave behind.

The specs that decide it

  • Compression: Secondary zip, roughly a third of the height out of soft items
  • Weight: Unchanged - compression is volume only
  • Best on: Jumpers, fleeces and outerwear
  • Watch: A compressed bag is denser, so weigh it before you fly

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Because compression makes space, it encourages packing more into the space - which is exactly the opposite of the goal here. On a weighed cabin bag it is the fastest route to an overweight carry-on.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my suitcase so heavy?
Usually three things: the empty case itself, which can be 9 to 11 lb for a large hardside; shoes, at 3 to 4 lb a pair; and full-size toiletries, which are mostly water. Weigh the empty case first - it is often a fifth of the total.
How can I avoid an overweight baggage fee?
Weigh the packed bag at home with a hook scale, wear your heaviest coat and boots rather than packing them, cut to two pairs of shoes, and move dense small items into your personal item, which is rarely weighed.
Do packing cubes make a suitcase lighter?
No. Compression reduces volume, not weight - and because it makes room, it tends to encourage packing more. It is useful for seeing how much of your bag was air, not for getting under 50 lb.
