The best packing cubes for carry-on luggage
In a carry-on the problem is not organisation, it is tiling. A cube that leaves a two-inch gap down one side has cost you a pair of shoes.

For a 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on the best cube set is the Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal set - the sizes tile a cabin-sized interior with almost no dead space, and the mesh tops mean you never open the wrong one. If you need to get more in rather than get it tidier, the Gonex compression cubes are the pick instead.
In a checked bag, cubes are about finding things. In a carry-on they are about geometry. A standard cabin interior is roughly 20 x 13 x 8 inches of usable space, and the only cube set worth owning is one whose medium and small sizes add up to that footprint without leaving a gap. A two-inch strip of unusable space down one side of a carry-on is about four percent of everything you were allowed to bring.
Compression does not beat the sizer
Compression cubes reduce the volume of your clothes, not the volume of your bag. In a hardside carry-on that means you fit more in. In a softside carry-on it can mean the case bulges past 9 inches of depth - so measure after you pack, not before.

The set whose sizes actually tile a cabin bag
Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set
The reason to pay more for this set is that the dimensions were chosen against real case interiors, so the three cubes stack into a cabin bag as a single block rather than as three objects with gaps between them. The mesh top is the other half: on a trip where you open the bag twice a day, being able to see which cube holds the shirts without unzipping anything is worth more than it sounds.
The specs that decide it
- Set: Small, medium and large - tiles a 22-inch cabin interior
- Top: Mesh, so contents are visible zipped
- Compression: None - this set organises, it does not shrink
- Build: The most durable zips and fabric in this group
Flaws but not dealbreakers
It is the most expensive set here by a wide margin, and it does not compress at all - if your problem is that your clothes do not fit, this set will organise them without solving it.

The ones with a second zip that squeezes the air out
Gonex Compression Packing Cubes
The second zip is the whole product: pack the cube, then zip it down and the stack of jumpers that was four inches tall becomes two and a half. On a winter carry-on that is the difference between a coat fitting and not fitting. It works best in a hardside case, where the shell holds the final shape no matter what you have squeezed inside.
The specs that decide it
- Compression: Secondary zip, roughly a third of the height out of soft clothing
- Best in: A hardside case that holds its own shape
- Set: Multiple sizes, so you can match cube to case
- Price: A fraction of the premium sets
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Compression does nothing for weight, so on an airline that weighs cabin baggage you can compress yourself straight past a 7 kg limit. The zips also take the strain of the compression and are the first thing to fail on cheap cubes.

The one that keeps its shape in a backpack
Peak Design Packing Cube (Medium)
In a 40-litre travel backpack there is no rigid shell doing the organising, so the cube has to do it. This one holds its form when the pack is half empty, and the internal divider splits clean clothing from worn without a second bag. It is the cube to buy if your carry-on is a pack rather than a case.
The specs that decide it
- Structure: Holds its shape in a soft pack
- Divider: Internal split for clean and worn
- Expansion: Zips out for a little more volume
- Sold: Individually rather than as a set
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Sold singly, so a full set costs as much as a cheap carry-on, and the structure means the cube takes up its full volume even when it is barely packed - the opposite of what you want on the return leg.

The one that proves the concept for the price of lunch
Bagail 6-Set Packing Cubes
Six cubes means you can experiment: try two mediums side by side, then a large and two smalls, and find out what actually tiles your case before spending real money. It is also the sensible way to cube a family, where four people need cubes and nobody needs premium zips.
The specs that decide it
- Set: Six cubes across four sizes
- Fabric: Light polyester with mesh panels
- Compression: None
- Use: A first set, or spares for the rest of the household
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The zips and seams are the budget part and they show it after a year of weekly travel. The sizes are also generic rather than chosen against case interiors, so expect one of the six to be the wrong shape for your bag.

How the cube sets compare in a carry-on

| Gonex compression | Yes - about a third | Roughly | Hardside case | Zips take the strain |
| Peak Design cube | Slight | Single cube only | Travel backpack | Sold individually |
| Bagail 6-set | No | One of six will not fit | Any | Budget zips |
Tiling: the measurement nobody publishes
A 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on has an internal footprint of roughly 20 x 13 inches once the shell, lining and wheel housing are deducted, and about 7 to 8 inches of usable depth. The question that decides whether a cube set is good is whether its sizes add up to that rectangle.
- Two medium cubes side by side across the width is the most common working layout in a cabin case.
- A large cube along the length plus two smalls beside it is the other one that tiles cleanly.
- Anything that leaves a strip narrower than about three inches has created space you cannot use for clothing - put socks, chargers or a toiletry bag there deliberately.
If you are starting from scratch, measure your case interior with a tape before you buy. The general method for a bag's outside dimensions is in how to measure carry-on luggage; inside, you only need the flat footprint.
Compression cubes or plain cubes
Plain cubes make a bag findable. Compression cubes make a bag fit. They are different purchases and the honest answer depends on which problem you have - the full argument is in packing cubes vs compression bags and are packing cubes worth it.
The one thing compression cannot do is reduce weight. On most US domestic carriers no cabin weight limit is published, so compressing is pure gain. On the majority of international and low-cost carriers the cabin bag is weighed at 7 to 10 kg, and a compressed carry-on is heavier for its size, not lighter. That is the single most common way compression backfires.
A layout that works in a cabin case
- Shoes in bags, soles out, against the wheel end where the case is already lumpy.
- Two medium cubes side by side on top of them: one for tops, one for bottoms.
- A small cube for underwear and socks in the gap beside the handle tubes, which is otherwise dead space.
- Toiletries in the lid pocket, not the main body - that is the first thing security will want out.
- One flat layer across the top for a jacket or anything that must not crease.
The step-by-step version of this, with the folding method, is in how to pack a carry-on.
