Best luggage for a week-long trip

A week is the length where the carry-on question is genuinely open. The answer depends on one decision: whether you will wash anything.

For a week-long trip, the Travelpro Maxlite 5 expandable checked spinner at around 25 inches is the right size if you are not planning to wash anything. If you will do one load of laundry mid-trip, a carry-on does the whole week and the Travelpro Platinum Elite 21-inch is the bag to buy. That laundry decision, not the length of the trip, is what sets the size.

Here is the arithmetic. Seven days of clothes without washing is roughly seven of everything that touches skin, three or four outer layers and two pairs of shoes. That is a 60 to 70 liter bag, which is a 25-inch checked case. One mid-trip wash cuts the underlayers to four and the whole lot drops to 35 to 45 liters, which is a carry-on.

There is no third answer. Buying a 28-inch case for one week means carrying a half-empty bag that is easy to overfill past the 50 lb limit, and trying to force seven unwashed days into a 21-inch case means wearing the same shirt twice regardless. How to pack a carry-on for a week is the technique for the smaller version.

Best overallPick 1

The one that holds seven unwashed days without being huge

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Checked Spinner

Anyone doing a week without planning to wash anything, who is happy to check a bag. The 25-inch class is the right size for seven days; the weight-first construction means more of the 50 lb allowance is clothes rather than suitcase.

The specs that decide it

  • Size class: Around 25 inches - the right class for seven unwashed days
  • Weight: Light for a checked case - more of the 50 lb allowance is yours
  • Shell: Softside, which absorbs handling better than a thin hardshell
  • Expansion: Expansion zip for the return leg

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A light shell on a checked bag scuffs and the lighter fabric is less abrasion-resistant than a heavier line. Expanded, it can cross the 62 linear inch limit, and a 25-inch case filled with shoes passes 50 lb more easily than people expect.

Best carry-on-onlyPick 2

The one that does a week in the cabin if you wash once

Travelpro Platinum Elite 21-inch Expandable Carry-On Spinner

Travelers prepared to do one load of laundry in exchange for never checking a bag, never paying a bag fee and never waiting at a carousel. The interior organization is what makes a week's worth of clothes stay findable in a small case.

The specs that decide it

  • Footprint: Carry-on size unexpanded - measure over wheels and handle
  • Interior: Suiter, compression straps and full pocketing
  • Handle: Contour grip with multiple stops
  • Expansion: Expansion zip for the return leg, if you check it then

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A week in cold weather does not fit - coats and boots change the arithmetic completely. It is also the heavier carry-on choice, which matters on international carriers that weigh the cabin bag at 7 to 10 kg.

Best for several stopsPick 3

The one for a week spread across three cities

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Travelers whose week is three or four stops rather than one. The mesh-fronted compartments mean you can find a shirt without unpacking, which is the thing that goes wrong on a multi-stop week in a conventional suitcase.

The specs that decide it

  • Capacity: 35 liters - a week with one laundry stop
  • Opening: Full clamshell, packs like a suitcase
  • Organization: Mesh-fronted compartments - contents visible without unpacking
  • Harness: Shoulder straps and hip belt that stow behind a panel

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You carry it, which is tiring over a long terminal and wrong if you have back or shoulder problems. The fixed internal divider also wastes volume compared with an empty sack, and 35 liters is genuinely tight for a week in winter.

Makes the carry-on fitPick 4

The one that decides whether the week fits the cabin bag

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes

Anyone attempting seven days in a carry-on. Most of what fills a bag for a week is air trapped in knitwear and fleece, and a compression cube removes it. This is the cheapest thing that changes whether the trip is carry-on-only or not.

The specs that decide it

  • Mechanism: Second zip compresses the packed cube
  • Best on: Knitwear, fleece and anything that traps air
  • Set: Mixed sizes, so one cube per clothing category
  • Side effect: Keeps clean and worn clothes separated across a week

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Compression saves volume, not weight, so it does nothing for an airline weight limit - and by letting you pack more it makes overweight more likely. Compressed clothes also crease harder, which matters for anything you need to look smart in.

The arithmetic of seven days

Clothing volume for a trip is not linear with its length, because outer layers and shoes are a fixed cost you pay once. What scales is the things you wear against your skin, and that is the only line item laundry changes.

Cold weather shifts every row up one. A week in winter is genuinely difficult in a carry-on and how to pack for a week in a carry-on in winter is about that specific problem. What size luggage do I need covers the general version.

The laundry decision

One mid-trip wash removes roughly three days of underlayers from the packing list. That is the difference between a checked bag and a carry-on for a week, and it is a smaller commitment than it sounds - a sink, a sheet of detergent and an overnight hang does socks and underwear comfortably.

  • Detergent sheets weigh nothing and are not a liquid, so they do not touch your quart bag.
  • A sink wash takes ten minutes and dries overnight for anything thin. Jeans and heavy cotton will not dry in time.
  • A laundromat mid-trip is faster than it sounds and lets you pack like a three-day trip for fourteen days.
  • Hotel laundry is the expensive version of the same decision - worth knowing the price before you rely on it.

Best travel laundry kit covers the gear, which is small and cheap enough that it is worth carrying on any trip over five days whether you plan to use it or not.

Do not buy one size up just in case

A 28-inch case for a one-week trip looks like insurance and behaves like a trap. Bags get filled to their volume, not to the need, and a 28-inch case filled with clothes and two pairs of shoes will pass 50 lb before it looks full. The overweight fee then costs more than the bag fee you were avoiding.

The constraint on a large checked bag is weight, not space - which is the opposite of a carry-on, where the constraint is dimensions. Suitcase sizes in inches sets out what each size class actually holds, and checked bag size and weight limits has the published airline figures.

Weigh it before you leave for the airport

A luggage scale costs less than one overweight fee and settles the only question you cannot argue at a check-in desk. See best luggage scales.

Shoes are the real constraint

Two pairs of shoes plus the pair on your feet is the single biggest volume decision in a week's packing, and it is the one most easily reduced. Three pairs for a week is a choice, not a requirement, and dropping to two frees roughly the volume of a day's clothing.

Pack them soles-to-soles in a bag so they do not mark anything - best shoe bags for travel - and fill them with socks, because an empty shoe in a suitcase is wasted volume.

Frequently asked questions

What size suitcase do I need for a week?
A 25-inch checked case if you are not washing anything, or a 21-inch carry-on if you will do one load of laundry mid-trip. Seven unwashed days is roughly 60 to 70 liters; one mid-trip wash drops that to 35 to 45 liters, which is carry-on territory.
Can you fit a week in a carry-on?
Yes, in warm weather, if you plan one laundry stop and use compression cubes. Without a wash it means wearing things twice. In cold weather a week in a carry-on is genuinely hard, because coats and boots are a fixed volume cost you cannot compress away.
Is a 28-inch suitcase too big for a week?
For one person, usually yes. Bags get filled to their volume rather than to the need, and a 28-inch case packed with clothes and shoes will pass a 50 lb airline limit before it looks full - so you pay an overweight fee to carry things you did not need.
How many outfits should I pack for a week?
Seven of everything worn against the skin, three or four outer layers that get re-worn, and two pairs of shoes including the ones on your feet. One mid-trip wash cuts the underlayers to about four, which is what makes a carry-on possible.
Should I check a bag for a one-week trip?
Only if you are not washing anything. Carry-on-only for a week saves the bag fee, removes the risk of the bag being mishandled and gets you out of the airport immediately. The cost is one load of laundry somewhere in the middle.
Do compression cubes help fit a week in a carry-on?
Yes, meaningfully, because most of what fills a bag for a week is air trapped in knitwear. They save volume but not weight, so they will not help with an airline weight limit - and by letting you pack more, they can make overweight more likely.
