The best duffel bags for checked luggage
A hardside checked bag spends five to ten pounds of your allowance on itself. A duffel spends two or three. Here is what that buys and what it costs.

For a checked duffel the best all-round choice is the Thule Chasm 70L - about 70 litres inside the 62 linear inch limit, a coated shell that survives a carousel, and an empty weight low enough that most of the 50 lb allowance is cargo rather than bag. If you need wheels on that capacity, the Osprey Transporter 90L is the pick instead.
The arithmetic that makes a duffel attractive in the hold is simple. Nearly every airline caps a checked bag at 50 lb and 62 linear inches (length + width + height). A large hardside spinner weighs 9 to 11 lb empty; a soft duffel of the same volume weighs 2 to 4 lb. That is five to seven pounds of allowance handed back to you, which is roughly a pair of boots and a coat.
Linear inches, not litres
Airlines measure the sum of the three sides, not volume. A 70-litre duffel at 27 x 14 x 14 inches is 55 linear inches and legal; a 70-litre duffel cut long and shallow can break 62 at the same capacity. Check the published dimensions, not the litre figure.

The one that balances capacity, weight and durability
Thule Chasm 70L Duffel
Seventy litres is the sweet spot for a checked duffel: enough for ten days including shoes and a coat, still comfortably inside 62 linear inches, and light enough empty that you are not paying the allowance for the bag. The wide-mouth opening is the practical advantage over a suitcase - the whole top unzips, so you load it in armfuls rather than in layers, and the coated fabric wipes clean after a wet carousel.
The specs that decide it
- Capacity: About 70 L
- Shell: Coated, wipe-clean fabric that shrugs off rain on a tarmac
- Opening: Wide-mouth top zip - loads in armfuls
- Carry: Grab handles plus removable shoulder or backpack straps
Flaws but not dealbreakers
There is no internal structure, so anything fragile has to be padded by what is around it, and a fully loaded 70-litre duffel at 45 lb is awkward to carry any distance by hand. It will also not stand up on its own when half empty.

The one for when you cannot carry 50 pounds
Osprey Transporter Wheeled Duffel 90L
A checked duffel at the 50 lb limit is genuinely heavy, and the moment you have to move it more than a hundred yards the absence of wheels stops being a weight saving and starts being a problem. This is the answer: full duffel capacity, big burly wheels, and haul handles at both ends so two people can lift it into a car or a boat.
The specs that decide it
- Capacity: 90 L - comfortably two weeks, or gear for two
- Wheels: Large-diameter, built for rough ground as well as terminals
- Handles: Haul handles at both ends for lifting with help
- Check: Confirm the packed dimensions against your carrier's 62 linear inch limit
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Wheels and a frame give back most of the weight advantage the duffel format exists for - it is the heaviest bag here empty. At 90 litres it is also easy to pack past 50 lb and straight into an overweight fee.

The one that goes in the hold and then up a mountain
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L
Forty litres is small for a checked bag and that is deliberate: it is the duffel you check when the trip involves a bus roof, a boat deck or a ski shuttle after the flight. The coated ripstop is the toughest fabric here, the straps convert to a backpack carry, and because it only holds 40 litres it is very hard to pack it overweight.
The specs that decide it
- Capacity: 40 L - a four-to-six day load in the hold
- Fabric: Coated ripstop, the most abrasion-resistant shell here
- Carry: Converts between duffel and backpack straps
- Linear: Well inside 62 linear inches
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Forty litres checked is a lot of allowance left unused - if you are paying a bag fee anyway, you are paying it for half a bag. The backpack straps are also a compromise rather than a real harness, fine for a mile and uncomfortable after three.

The one that lives flat until the trip home
Narwey Foldable Travel Duffel Bag
This is insurance rather than luggage. It packs flat into a corner of your case on the way out, and on the way home it is the bag that takes the things that will not fit - or the second checked bag on a carrier where a second bag is cheap. At this price it does not need to be good, only present.
The specs that decide it
- Packed size: Folds down to roughly paperback size
- Use: Overflow, laundry, or a cheap second checked bag home
- Fabric: Lightweight nylon - thin, not armoured
- Carry: Webbing handles plus a trolley sleeve
Flaws but not dealbreakers
It is thin, unpadded fabric and it will not take a hostile carousel more than a handful of times. Nothing breakable should go in it, and a single bad snag ends it.

How the checked duffels compare
| Pick | Capacity | Wheels | Best for | Main flaw |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Osprey Transporter 90L | 90 L | Yes | Heavy loads, long walks | Heaviest empty |
| Patagonia Black Hole 40L | 40 L | No | Rough trips after the flight | Leaves allowance unused |
| Narwey foldable | Varies | No | Overflow and the trip home | Thin fabric, not durable |
Why check a duffel rather than a suitcase
Three reasons, in order of how much they matter. First, empty weight: a soft duffel hands you five to seven pounds of the 50 lb allowance that a large hardside spends on its own shell, wheels and handle. Second, shape tolerance: a duffel squashes into a car boot, a bus hold or a train rack where a rigid case has to go somewhere specific. Third, loading: the whole top unzips, so you pack in armfuls instead of in careful layers.
What you give up is structure and wheels. Nothing in a duffel is protected by the bag - it is protected by what you packed around it - and a 48 lb duffel with no wheels is a genuinely unpleasant object to move. The full comparison is in luggage vs duffel bag.
The 62 linear inch rule, in practice
Almost every airline sets one checked-bag size limit and expresses it as 62 linear inches - add the length, the width and the depth. A 27 x 15 x 14 inch duffel is 56 linear inches and fine. The trap is that a soft bag's depth is whatever you packed into it, so a duffel quoted at 14 inches deep can measure 17 once it is full.
- Oversize fees start the moment you cross 62 linear inches and are typically charged on top of any overweight fee.
- Weight is the limit you will hit first: 50 lb on most carriers, 70 lb in some premium cabins.
- A duffel with external compression straps can be pulled back inside the limit; one without cannot.
The per-airline figures are in checked bag size and weight limits, and a hook scale is the only way to know before the counter does - see best luggage scales.
Sizing by trip length
| Trip | Capacity | Typical format |
|---|---|---|
| Long weekend | 30-40 L | Carry it; often clears carry-on too |
| Week | 60-70 L | Wide-mouth duffel, carried or shoulder-slung |
| Two weeks | 70-90 L | Wheeled duffel - this is where wheels stop being optional |
| Gear trip (ski, dive, photo) | 90 L+ | Wheeled, haul handles, padded contents |
Past about 70 litres the question stops being capacity and becomes whether you can lift it. A 90-litre duffel packed to 50 lb is the heaviest single object most travellers will handle on a trip.
How to pack a duffel so it behaves like a suitcase
- Cube everything. A duffel with no internal structure gets its structure from packing cubes - see best packing cubes.
- Build a floor: shoes and heavy items along the bottom length of the bag, near the zip side, so the weight sits low when the bag is upright.
- Pad the ends. The corners are where a carousel hits hardest, so keep soft clothing there and nothing rigid.
- Fill to the shape you want. A duffel takes the shape of its contents, so an underfilled bag sags and measures oddly.
- Pull the compression straps before you leave for the airport, then weigh it.
